Chapter 2, Fear

A peaceful week went by. That bastard disappeared.

Ye Zi’s mother who had come over to cook for him was all smiles and said she stopped receiving any of his threats on her phone. Her friend told her that the bastard had already been absent from work for three days.

However, his mother’s joy had only rubbed off on him for just half an hour. After that, he began to panic. He would buy the newspapers every day, carefully checking the panels for any news of that bastard being murdered, and checking anything else that looked relevant, day after day.

Another three days went. That bastard still did not show up in front of anyone, and his room was confirmed to be empty as well.

It seems like Hare succeeded.

Ye Zi began to suffer from insomnia. Even a little beep from his phone made him feel restless. He wondered every single moment when Hare would contact him, and occasionally, he would even feel that it was just a fluke. He thought that maybe that exchange with Hare was just a joke and that he had not been taken seriously. Maybe Hare had nothing to do with the bastard’s disappearance at all.

But soon after, he received a message. It consisted of two words.

“Your turn.”

Ye Zi clenched his phone tightly. The nerves on his brain were tense and his heart was pounding.

In less than two minutes, he received a document. It contained a photo, name, occupation, address, and so on. It even including things such as hobbies, friends, and all sorts of suggestions. It was a rather detailed collection.

Name: Jiang Wei

Age: 25

Occupation: Singer

She was a rather pretty woman with long hair dyed burgundy. She had fair skin, grey lenses in her eyes, red lips, and a seductive figure. She would sing in the bar occasionally and was a singer with just a smidge of popularity to her name. So she was the woman “Hare” found to bear his child? The one who abused his mother? Who climbed into his bed? She was…the woman he needed to kill?

Somehow his phone had turned into a hot potato in his hands. Ye Zi dropped it onto the sofa and slouched down, scratching his head. God, did he really need to kill someone? But…he had never killed anyone before. Did he really have the guts to do it? How should he do it?

Ye Zi did not sleep a wink that night.

The next day, he began tailing Jiang Wei. He should be feeling grateful that it was currently his summer vacation. School was out.

But Jiang Wei’s life was actually quite ordinary. Every day, she would only head out in the afternoon to visit the beauty salon, or to play mahjong. Then, she would either head home at night or go to a bar. Sometimes she may set off in a fancy car in the middle of the night and return home around noon the next day.

Every single day, Ye Zi planned how he was going to kill that woman. A car accident? Poison? Drag her out to the woods? Hire someone? Or maybe…kill her while she was drunk?

But most of the time, Ye Zi was hesitant. Though he loved watching horror films and had long been used to seeing bloody scenes, he never thought he would actually kill someone.

On the third day, Ye Zi finally found an opportunity.

It was a hot night out in the bar that night. That woman drank a lot of alcohol and was completely drunk. Her companion was completely out as well. Ye Zi was sitting on the sofa just two tables away from her, his fists clenched tight. Inside of his pocket were the sleeping pills he had secretly taken from his mother’s place, and a knife in his pant pocket.

He could clearly see her lying on her bare arms under the strobe lights, and how fair her shoulders were.

He didn’t even need the pills anymore. All he had to do was go over and pretend to be her friend, then take her away. The scene of the crime was going to be the old warehouse about a kilometer away from here. He had already gotten the floorboards ready and also bought the tools he needed. All he needed to do was to get it over with, calmly. It’ll definitely be fine. Definitely.

Then, he just stared at the woman. He couldn’t move at all.

His entire body was stiff. He realized that he didn’t dare to do it at all. Indeed he had never even killed a chicken before at his age, much less a person!

Then, his phone rang. His mom was calling.

“Ah Zi, it’s so late, why aren’t you back yet? Your uncle and I are free today so we figured we would surprise you. We’re already waiting here with food on the table.”

“I’m coming back right now.”

After hanging up, Ye Zi stood up and left the bar.

When he felt the cool breeze on his face, he instantly felt relieved.

They had a very pleasant evening that day. After having dinner together, he helped his mom wash the plates and chatted with his uncle. For the first time, he felt the joy of living together as a family. But this joy was something he was scared of losing even more now than before.

His mother would definitely faint if she found out he wanted to kill someone.

If he fails, he’ll be caught and sent to prison. He might even receive the death penalty.

Why did he have to take the risk?

Why did he have to kill?

Ye Zi began searching madly on the net for any news regarding murder exchanges. Then, his eyes brightened.

Why was he so stupid?? That bastard might have just gone missing. He was just gone, he might not even be dead!

Hah, that Hare guy was a cunning one. Was he trying to trick him into doing it??

After thinking that, Ye Zi felt completely relieved and even got a long-awaited good night’s sleep. Then, another peaceful week went by.

One day, his phone vibrated. Just as he expected, he received a text from Hare urging him. “It’s been two weeks, why haven’t you done it yet?”

Ye Zi responded, “You told me to go after you’re done, but that guy’s only gone missing. What proof do you have that you were the one who did it?”

Yeah. That’s it.

It’s scary to kill someone, and it takes guts. He didn’t believe that Hare really had that courage at all!

Hare did not respond to him.

Ye Zi felt completely relieved and decided to head out for a good meal so as to comfort his frightened soul.

Then, after only five minutes, he received a video.

Curiously, he opened it. After watching it for about two minutes, he fell completely still. His eyes were wide and his pupils had shrunk from shock. He quickly pressed on the pause button and he could feel his heart beating so fast that he was going to throw up.

The video was a little blurry, but he could see clearly that this was “Hare” recording of his murder.

That man’s chest was bare and his fat body was tied up. A man dressed in a raincoat and boots was standing with his back to the camera with a sharp, shiny blade in his right hand. The man squealed like a pig but his head was immediately stomped on by the man in the raincoat, constantly grinding it to the floorboards. Then, he raised up the sharp blade and slashed right down to the man’s neck…

Ye Zi skipped the middle part completely and went to the end.

Many small packages were stacked up in the room. A single bare arm laid outside while the entire room was covered in a dark red fluid.

At this moment, Ye Zi’s appetite was completely thrown out the window. He supported himself against the wall and threw up. He felt like he had just been soaking in water. He was covered in sweat from head to toe, and it even drenched his hair.

The people passing by would look back at him every so often. Some kind-hearted older ladies even came to ask, “Are you all right, young man?”

Ye Zi nodded and wiped away the filth at his lips. Then, he staggered forward, his mind in chaos.

God, that’s sick…He’s inhumane…

Hare…That person in the raincoat was him, right?

If that was what killing was like, then he definitely wasn’t cut out for it.

But could he choose not to kill that woman?

Did he have to fulfill his end of the bargain?

That’s right. Hare doesn’t even know where he is or what he looks like. Even if he doesn’t hold up his end of the agreement, what was he going to do about it?

But of course, that was merely Ye Zi’s wishful thinking.

Hare seemed to be able to see through all his thoughts and send him two messages.

After reading them, Ye Zi’s fear reached its peak.

Because, it wrote:

“Do you know what happens to people who don’t honor their word? I’ve already killed one. I don’t mind killing another.”

“That’s right, I forgot to tell you. I’ve been watching you since just now ^^. I’ve been watching you for ten minutes.”
