Chapter 4, Meeting

Life after that went as smoothly as he expected.

They had a very rich and colorful week in Hainan, staying in a five-star hotel, great sunshine, beaches, and also delicious food…Practically every single day was spent in laughter, and each night in happiness.

After school began, Ye Zi finally became a junior in college. He welcomed the new students and engaged in his club’s activities. It was a very busy time. After that, spring finally arrived for him…He found a girlfriend. She was a very pure and beautiful freshman called Nie Haixia, and it was her who confessed to him first, the reason of it being that he was the one who welcomed her at the school gates and helped her move her luggage, setting up her bed and so on, and the look he had when he did that made her fall in love.

And so, they quickly became one of the silly pairs of lovers gathering underneath the trees every night. They would go for walks by the small river, chat on the benches, walking into the movies together while holding hands, standing together on stage in a couple T-shirt designing contest, and standing outside of a hotel with blushing cheeks…

But the more time they spent with each other, the more the problems on each side began to show up.

Two months later, Nie Haixia’s princess syndrome revealed itself.

She came from an upstanding family so she always accepted only the best in everything. She wouldn’t take public transport, would immediately buy a dress as soon as she liked one, was particularly extravagant whenever her period came, and her birthdays always have to be celebrated in the most romantic ways possible. As soon as she got the details of Ye Zi’s bank account, she immediately began buying everything like mad. Ye Zi would have to head outside of school to grab her parcels for her every day, and she would throw many of them aside after using them once. Some were even thrown straight out. Ye Zi did not have much in his card to begin with, so it was quickly emptied out. Later, she would ask Ye Zi directly for money. Whenever Ye Zi told her awkwardly that he hadn’t received his living expenses recently, her attitude would grow cold with him. She would leave Ye Zi alone at night to sit in the cold winds while she played games by herself in the dorm.

But of course, Ye Zi could bear with it if these were her only problems. Nie Haixia was the goddess of the Chinese Department, so many people failed to even get a chance with her, so he really had to cherish her well. So, he headed to the city to find three tutoring jobs he could do during the weekends and would usually help to deliver food at the shops in the food street. Of course, he wanted to please his girlfriend even more on her birthday. He would do things such as lighting a heart out of candles downstairs while he confessed in public with a large bouquet of roses in hand.

But after three months, the problems became incisive.

With his own ears, he heard his girlfriend talking badly about him, and a direct quote was so:

Girl, “You’re so lucky to have a boyfriend like that, Haixia!”

Nie Haixia, “As if I would be.”

Girl, “What’s bad about him? He buys you anything he wants, he’s romantic, and also really handsome. Is he a rich second generation?”

Nie Haixia, “Like hell he’s one! I thought his family background was decent when I first got together with him but he’s actually from a single-parent household, and he only has 10,000 in his card. His mom just got married and I heard they’re planning to have children in the future. Since he’s not living with his family, I doubt he’ll be able to get much out of them. Ugh, and the most unbearable thing is…”

Girl, “?”

Nie Haixia, “He’s a mom-con! Even while we were eating together he would always mention that his mom cooks it better. What the hell? If his mom is so great then he might as well go get with his mom, why’d he get with me? Seriously.”

Girl, “Come on, if you’re so unsatisfied with him you can just give him to me.”

Nie Haixia, “Who said I’ll give him to you? Even though there’s no future for us, it’s still all right for now. He’s good enough that I can show him off and he treats me pretty well, buying me whatever I ask for. But just…Ugh…I can’t tie the knot with him.”

Girl, “Hah! That’s right, no wonder you’ve been so close with Liu Kai from the ComSci Department recently.”

On that night, Ye Zi did a very despicable thing. While his girlfriend was in the shower, he took her phone and checked her QQ.

After discovering the truth, he was so pissed that he was shaking. His mind was covered in rage.

Nie Haixia called Liu Kai hubby.

She never even called him that before.

Nie Haixia had just come out with a towel around herself and wiped her hair charmingly while sitting down next to Ye Zi, but Ye Zi pushed her away.

On that night, they had a big fight and he said he wanted to break up with her. Then, he avoided Nie Haixia for an entire week.

However, half a month later, Nie Haixia actually began sitting outside of his door, waiting for him to return while she cried, apologizing, and deleted all the numbers beside his on her phone. Then, he knelt there for almost all of that night.

He forgave her, the two got together once more, and they became lovey-dovey again.

In December, the club held a big dinner event and the students from every department could “bring their family” along to participate. The event covered nearly the entire first floor of the hotel in a buffet meal. There was wine, meat, and music, a rather luxurious function.

Ye Zi and Nie Haixia were sitting together, having a toast with everyone and having fun. Soon after, all of them began to get a little red and tipsy. Ye Zi’s buddy, Jiang Wen, was even scraping up all of Ye Zi’s dark pasts, making him feel very depressed. Then, he teased them, saying that he won’t come to school anymore tomorrow and would just book a room here for the night. When she heard that, Nie Haixia turned completely red. It actually looked pretty cute.

Halfway through the gathering, Jiang Wen suddenly became a little skittish. When the Finance Department’s goddess Xiao Qin stood up excitedly to leave for a bit, he picked up the phone she had forgotten to bring with her and said, “You brats are way too slow! Xiao Qin just broke up recently but she already has a new boyfriend!”

The group immediately became spirited. “What?? Who?”

Jiang Wen looked left and right, then he turned on Xiao Qin’s screen, unlocking it expertly, and with an evil grin on his face, pulled up a certain phone number. “Look at the name, look at the label! It says ‘D-e-a-r!'”

The faces of the group immediately turned sour. But then, they continued to probe, “But who is it?? You’ve already got us by the guts so don’t tell us you don’t know!”

“Of course I know! They got together as fast as lightning! They just met last week and already began dating. And now they’ve already become ‘family’. You can tell that…”

“Hey! Who is it really? Is he from our school? What department??”

“He’s not from our school. Seems to be a high school student, actually.”

“The heck???? A high school student???? So it turns out Xiao Qin likes the brother-sister trope?? Can a kid like that really do the job?”

“Hey don’t call him a kid, that guy’s way more handsome than any of us. He’s up there with the models!”

Then, the girls around them also became excited. Ye Zi could also keenly feel that Nie Haixia was also itching to know. It made him unhappy, and because of that, he looked to Jiang Wen’s phone and saw the number on the phone.

Then, he was completely stunned.

It was Hare’s number. He had already memorized it since a long time ago, and he knew it so well he could recite it backwards.

That was the number that caused him fear, the number that symbolized his sin.

Then, pretending to look over unintentionally, he saw it a few more times and even took out his own phone to compare them.

There’s no doubt about it. It’s exactly the same.

Why?

No.

There can’t be this many coincidences in this world.

Unless…is someone else using that number now? Was he just worrying over nothing?

Right, that must be it.

Then, Ye Zi saw two people walking towards them, and the two of them drew the eyes of everyone.

The Finance Department’s goddess Xiao Qin was wearing a short skirt with high heels even during the cold winters of December. She had a beautiful figure and a well dolled up face. And though she was wearing heels, she only managed to reach the height of the teen’s shoulder beside her. This young man was wearing a simple black down jacket with a dark grey scarf around his neck, as well as a pair of short black boots. He had a very tall figure with light hair and even fairer skin.

Very soon, they arrived at the table. The people around them quickly made way for them, and some of the girls were exclaiming, “God…”

The boy’s movements were very natural with not the slightest bit of nervousness in him. He took off his jacket and scarf and hung it on his chair. Right now, he wore a thin icy grey sweater with the white collar of his shirt exposed through the V-neck opening. He had a very fair neck and the shape of it was beautiful. To the shocked gazes of everyone around him, he responded with a light smile. After Xiao Qin introduced him to everyone, he gave everyone a soft greeting. “Nice to meet you all. I’m Jason.”

The young teen sat just across of Ye Zi and his actions were very graceful, giving him the air of an aristocrat. Towards the bombardment of questions from the girls, he answered them all vaguely. But to tell the truth, just hearing his gentle voice was enough to get all of them pregnant.

“Hey Jason, is your hair natural or dyed? It’s such a pretty color. It looks a little chestnut under the lights, but also a little golden.”

“It’s natural. My body just lacks certain pigments.”

“That’s amazing! Are you a mix? Your eyes are also really light. They look so beautiful.”

“Maybe.”

“Wow—”

“Are you really a high school student? You’re so tall!”

“I’m in my second year.”

“Just a sophomore?! You must be very popular in school!”

“I’m so-so.”

“How did you and Xiao Qin know each other? When you’re dating her, is it…”

The girls’ questions were practically endless, but Ye Zi was constantly staring at the teen, observing each and every one of his features. He didn’t even pay attention when his own girlfriend was talking to him.

It was clear that this young man was a complete bombshell of a man to most people, but Ye Zi didn’t think he was that handsome. Instead, he felt like he was a little too soft. He had a petite face with light, soft bangs that covered his eyes slightly. There was a very slight dark tone underneath his eyes, so light that it could hardly be considered dark at all, and he had a high nose bridge with thin, lightly-tinted lips. His voice was very gentle, and a relatively slow tone of speech.

Could he be…Hare?

Hare was a very cruel person. In his imaginations, he should be someone dark, morbid, and stronger. He could be a punk on the road, body covered in scars, a big and fierce muscle man on the streets, or even a scheming man with glasses…But this person looked too soft, too pure. He looked more like a prince from beyond this world.

Everyone began asking him some adult questions and the teen was slightly taken aback. His cheeks actually turned slightly red.

It’s not him.

Ye Zi thought so immediately.

He had seen Hare once through that terrifying video. Inside of the video, Hare was wearing a raincoat and his actions were merciless. There was no way he could connect that person in the video with this young man in front of him at all. Or maybe he should say that the person in the video was a beast, while this teen was just a little lamb.

Moreover, that person did not look at his direction from beginning to end. Hare was a sick enough fellow to be stalking him and all, so it definitely couldn’t be him.

Ye Zi sighed in relief. Then, he grabbed some food for Nie Haixia.

On the other hand, Nie Haixia was clearly cross-eyed from looking at him. Ye Zi quipped, displeased, “Seriously?”

Nie Haixia was stunned for a moment. Then she quickly realized that Ye Zi was being jealous. Smiling, she nudged Ye Zi’s shoulder and said, “Gosh, hubby, I’m just looking at a hot guy! Fine fine, I’ll only look at you!”

“Hmph. That’s better.”

The gathering continued and soon, many of them were down for the count. Some of them went back to school early while some others even said that they wanted to party all night.

Soon, half of the people at Ye Zi’s table left. Wondering if he should be bringing his girlfriend back to school, Ye Zi’s phone suddenly rang. It was the notification tone for a text message.

Ye Zi picked up his phone to check.

Then, it caught his breath.

[Hare: Not bad. Your girlfriend’s pretty cute.]

In that instant, Ye Zi immediately raised his head to look.

As expected!

Right at this moment, the teen was resting his jaw comfortably on his palm and staring at him over the bright lights.

There was a slight curve at his lips that seemed almost like a smile. Though it was clearly a tender one, Ye Zi’s body was covered in cold sweat!

Those eyes…The pale-colored eyes narrowed faintly, and it must have been his illusion, but Ye Zi seemed to have detected a terrifying red glow in them. And those thin lips…After seeing Ye Zi’s reaction, slowly, they began to move.

He was laughing.

He was talking.

But he couldn’t hear his voice at all.

But Ye Zi knew what he was saying.

Over and over, he mouthed out his name silently. Ye…Zi…

With morbid excitement and chilling joy, he repeated that name.

Over and over again.

Just like a devil hiding in the darkness, reciting the name of its prey, watching it, plotting, and completely silent.
